ELKHART CO. – The Indiana State Police has been requested to investigate a crash after a deputy with the Elkhart County Sheriff’s Office was hit head-on after another driver crossed the centerline early this morning.
A preliminary investigation by Master Trooper Mick Dockery indicates that on Sunday, January 21, at approximately 1:00 a.m., Patrolman Richard Jasinski was traveling south on State Road 15 near County Road 146 in his marked 2020 Dodge Durango. Just south of the intersection, a silver 2012 Chevrolet Impala traveling north allegedly crossed the center line, crashing into Jasinski head-on.
Jasinski was transported to Goshen Hospital, where he was treated and released. The driver of the Chevrolet, an 18-year-old male, had to be extricated from his vehicle. He was transported and admitted to Elkhart General Hospital with injuries that were serious but not believed to be life-threatening.
Alcohol is believed to be a factor in this crash. Toxicology results are pending for the driver of the Chevrolet.
Members from the Indiana State Police Crash Reconstruction Team responded to the scene to assist with the investigation. After the investigation, the report will be given to the Elkhart County Prosecutor’s Office for review.
