INDIANAPOLIS – Indiana State Police are reporting that a Tuesday evening shooting on I-465 led to the arrest of a 20-year-old Indianapolis man.
Javier Johnson was arrested on Tuesday on preliminary charges of criminal recklessness and possession of a handgun by a prohibited person.
Around 6 p.m. on Tuesday, dispatchers reported receiving a 911 call from an individual on I-465. This person told police that a driver of a Chevrolet Malibu had fired multiple shots toward them on I-465 northbound near Washington Street.
Troopers in the area were able to locate the Malibu, which Johnson reportedly drove. The release said the Malibu was pulled over on Post Road near 25th Street.
According to court documents, officers at the scene noticed a holster to a handgun on the floorboard of the driver’s side seat, as well as the butt of a pistol tucked under the driver’s seat.
In an interview with Johnson, the documents said that Johnson told police that a black Ford Explorer began to “brake check” Johnson when they were driving. When Johnson activated his brakes, Johnson reportedly told police a pistol came out from underneath the driver’s seat.
Johnson reportedly fired four to five rounds out of the driver’s side window and into the concrete media. The documents said that “he intentionally shot into the median and not at the Explorer.”
“Johnson stated that he did this because he felt the need to ‘defend’ himself from the Explorer and to scare the vehicle away,” the documents read. “He also stated that some of the shell casings may have landed inside of his vehicle but he wasn’t sure.”
Officials said Johnson was transported to the Marion County Jail. The investigation into the incident is ongoing.
