BEDFORD- The Lawrence County Expo Hall was packed on Saturday night as Becky’s Place hosted its Shelterbration event. It was a night of giving and thanksgiving as the community came together to support Becky’s Place as the beacon of hope and healing it is.
The event is held yearly to raise money for Becky’s Place, a women’s and children’s shelter in Bedford. It is a comprehensive operation offering shelter, meals, case management, educational resources, and more.
After a delicious dinner from Carla’s Catering, testimony was heard extolling the deeds that Becky’s Place does and its impact on this individual’s life. Former Bedford Mayor Shawna Girgis then handed out a few awards and recognized many within the organization and others who support it.
Dr. Kamal Girgis, husband of fellow presenter Sawna Girgis, collected donations in a live pledge that ranged in magnitude from $250 to $1000 and raised nearly $10,000. Dr. Girgis served as auctioneer and raised an additional $3,000. Some of the highlights of the live auction were:
- A set of 4 Colts tickets for $650
- Flowers for a year by West End Flower Shop for $600
- A Frye Purse for $300
- A private wine tasting at Total Wine and More in Greenwood for $475
- A pair of Pacers game suite tickets for $500
After the live auction, My Yellow Rickshaw took the stage and got the crowd jumping to close out the night.
After the band stopped and the last attendee went home, the event raised around $40,000 to help the homeless in our community. The Shelterbration is already set for April 5 next year, so be sure to save the date.
