A. Mitchelene Huffman, 86, of Bedford, passed away Sunday, March 24, at IU Health Hospital in Bloomington.
She was born July 25, 1937, in Glezen in Pike County, IN, to Herbert and Marjorie (Evans) Tolbert. On October 22, 1959, she married William Gene Huffman, who preceded her in death. She received her BS in education from Andrews University and an MS from Indiana University.
She taught at Mitchell High School, Tunnelton High School, and Bedford North Lawrence High School as Chair of the Business Department from its beginning until she retired in 1992. Mitchelene was an active and beloved member of the Bedford Seventh-day Adventist Church. She loved to play the piano and played for church services from a very young age and continued until last year when she was physically unable to do so. She also loved to play dulcimer and was a member of dulcimer groups in Mitchell and Bedford.
She was a proud mother of two sons, Marcus Keith (Meg) Huffman of Bedford and Michael Kent (Lorrie) Huffman of Bloomington, both of whom survive. Also surviving are grandchildren: John Huffman of Mitchell, Allen Huffman of Oolitic, and Cierra Huffman of Salt Lake City UT, Joshua Grubb and Alison Ballman, both of Bloomington; thirteen great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; one sister June (Jerry) Jackson of Petersburg; and four nieces.
Visitation will be held at Day and Carter Mortuary on Thursday, March 28, from 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m.
Funeral services will be held on Friday, March 29, at 11:00 at the Bedford Seventh-day Adventist Church at 1700 North Pike Road.
