BORDEN – Mitchell High School, the #8 ranked team in 2A, began their 2024 season on Wednesday with a dominant victory over Borden, beating the Braves 12-5.
The Bluejackets shined at the plate in the win, netting 15 hits and 12 RBIs. Their efforts were led by seniors Ethan Turner and AJ Sarver, who each managed three hits. Sarver batted in four runs in his five plate appearances, tying him with Kody Earl for most on the night.
In total, eight Mitchell batters were credited with base knocks, with five of them earning two or more; Sarver, Ben Seitzinger, Gibson Glassco, Turner, and Ashton Luman.
Seitzinger and Simon Gaines split time at the mound, combining to allow six hits while striking out eight, five of which were courtesy of Gaines.
Bluejackets head coach Jerry Chaney noted the team’s hot start, which saw them score two runs in the first inning off back-to-back doubles from Seitzinger and Glassco, with them eventually gaining a 10-run advantage by the fifth, which he credited to the team’s strong day at the plate, as well as the leadership of the nine seniors on this year’s roster.
“It was a nice start for us. We made some mistakes, but we hit the ball well,” said Chaney. “We came out ready to go early and that is a credit to our senior leadership.”
