BLOOMINGTON – A Seymour man died in a one-vehicle accident on Sunday, March 24, when he struck a tree near the Indiana University campus.
The accident was reported at 12:25 a.m. at the intersection of East Atwater Avenue and South Arbutus Drive.
According to police, when emergency crews arrived at the scene they attempted to revive 25-year-old Daniel Vargas after firefighters freed him from the mangled wreckage of his 2022 Telsa. He had serious injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.
According to police, Vargas was traveling east on Atwater Avenue at a high rate of speed when the car drove onto the curb near Eastside Drive sending the car across the west lane where it struck a grassy embankment. The car went airborne and struck a tree head-on, approximately 23 feet off the ground, and came to a stop on the street.
Vargas was a 2017 graduate of Seymour High School and a 2021 graduate of Indiana University Bloomington, where he studied to become a software engineer. He was a member of Central Christian Church and enjoyed sports, bicycling, soccer, cross country, and spending time with his friends.
