TERRE HAUTE – Terre Haute residents will soon experience upgraded community gardens with new amenities if this crowdfunding campaign reaches its goal of raising $9,700 by May 2, 2024. If successful, the project led by reTHink Inc. will receive a matching grant as part of the Indiana Housing and Community Development Authority’s (IHCDA) CreatINg Places program.
“The enhancement of the reTHink community gardens will continue the development of green spaces in the Wabash Valley,” said Lt. Gov. Suzanne Crouch, Indiana’s Secretary of Agriculture and Rural Development. “This campaign is the essence of the CreatINg Places initiative and would not be possible without the community’s support, dedication and vision.”
Funds from this campaign will expand the gardens with new pollinators and beds, equip gardens with more cost-effective irrigation, and install bike racks made of recycled plastic. They will also contribute to a community block party to kick off the gardening season and encourage locals to get involved.
“We are slowly but surely creating a culture of community gardening in the Wabash Valley and converting blighted spaces into green beautiful spaces,” said Dr. Shikha Bhattacharyya, Executive Director of reTHink, Inc. “Our community gardens are public spaces to not only grow food but also to learn and enjoy sustainability, and we are extremely thankful to IHCDA for their support.”
Since the CreatINg Places program began in 2016, projects have raised more than $10.5 million in public funds and an additional $8.7 million in matching IHCDA funds. The program is available to projects located in Indiana communities. Non-profit entities (with 501c3 or 501c4 status) and local government units can apply. Eligible projects must have a minimum total development cost of $10,000, where the recipient will receive $5,000 in IHCDA matching funds should it successfully raise $5,000 through Patronicity. IHCDA will provide matching grant funds up to $50,000 per project.
