BEDFORD – After a traffic stop on Thursday, March 28, two women were arrested on drug charges.
Lawrence County Sheriff’s Department deputies detained Shelby Horton, 30. of Mitchell, on charges of possession of meth and marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia and Chelsay Linton, 35, of Bedford, on charges of possession of meth and drug paraphernalia.
Deputy Andrew Tillett was on patrol when he noticed a vehicle parked in the Family Dollar store lot with an expired license plate. Deputy Tillett followed the tan Buick and conducted a traffic stop at F and 22nd Streets.
The driver was identified as Daniel Smith, and his passengers were Austin Smith, Shelby Horton, and Chelsay Linton. Deputy Tillet could smell the odor of marijuana coming from the vehicle.
Daniel Smith gave police permission to search his vehicle. Deputies Brenten Trueblood and Kenton Carter arrived to assist.
Inside a backpack located on the passenger floorboard where Horton was sitting, police found a blue container with a small amount of crystal meth inside. In Linton’s bag, police found a silver container with crystal meth.
Both Horton and Linton were detained.
Horton told police she found the blue container on the ground, picked it up, and put it in her bag. She told police she didn’t know what was inside.
While in a police vehicle, Horton admitted she had marijuana in her bra. Bedford Police Officer Sarah Haluda came to the scene and retrieved a white container from Horton’s bra. Inside the
the container was a metal smoking device and marijuana.
Daniel Smith issued a written warning about the expired license plate and false or fictitious registration.
