SCOTTSBURG – Bedford North Lawrence finished third in the Scott County Invitational on Saturday, and the Stars suffered a second setback when they lost top singles player Becca Epping with a season-ending injury.
Epping, a senior playing at No.1, dropped a 7-5, 6-4 decision to Eastern Pekin’s Eliza Starrett in the first round on Friday night, then made a visit to the emergency room to discover a broken bone in her left foot. In addition, BNL’s Ava McKinney withdrew with a foot injury after her match against North Harrison’s Madi Clunie. McKinney lost in three sets by a 4-6, 7-6 (7-4 in the tiebreaker), 6-2 decision at No.2 singles on Saturday.
“I wish we had never gotten on the bus for this one,” BNL coach Joni Stigall said. “What a mess.”
BNL’s Nadia Anderson reached the final at No.3 singles. She topped Lanesville’s Jeanine Sharp 6-2, 6-2 in the first round, then conquered Scottsburg’s Elyse Amick 6-4, 6-2 in the second round. Evansville North’s Gracie Watkins posted a 6-1, 6-0 win in the final as Anderson dropped her first match of the season.
Jessie Faubion and Meryl Klein won their first two rounds at No.2 doubles. They edged Lanesville’s Jane Davis and Sydney Hodges 7-5, 4-6, 6-2, then rolled past Scottsburg’s Scarlett Herald and Khloe Brown 6-2, 6-1. In the final, Evansville North’s Addison Beauchamp and Lilly Anderson recorded a 6-1, 6-0 victory.
At No.1 doubles, BNL’s Izzy Alldredge and Kenley Craig suffered their first loss in 28 matches with a 6-3, 6-1 setback to Evansville North’s Anna Chin and Kendra Wilke. That duo bounced back to top North Harrison’s Isabelle Abner and Sydney Smith 8-4 (in a quick pro set) in the consolation round.
The Stars will host Columbus East and celebrate Senior Night on Monday.
