BEDFORD—Memorial Day honors America’s military men and women who have lost their lives in service to their country.
According to Lawrence County Veterans Affairs Officer Brad Bough, originally called Decoration Day, from the early tradition of decorating graves with flowers, wreaths, and flags, Memorial Day is a day to remember those who have died in service to our country.
The holiday is observed on the last Monday of May when the weather is warmer, and schools and universities adjourn for summer break. To Americans, Memorial Day weekend marks the unofficial beginning of summer. Many attend parades, go to the beach, or have cookouts with friends and family.
But at its heart, Memorial Day is a day when Americans reflect on the sacrifices of those who have given their lives in military service. The county will host a Memorial Day program to honor those who sacrificed their lives on Monday, May 27th, at 9:00 a.m. on the courthouse lawn. The program will last about half an hour.
If it rains, the program will be held inside the courthouse.
