BEDFORD – The Spider Creek lift station and storage tank project has begun. Reynolds Construction was the low bidder on the project. The bid included the option of blasting as a way to minimize rock removal costs to the site where Geotech showed considerable hard rock. Blasting is a safe and cost-saving alternative for this project.
The subcontractor SX Blasting, based in Wisconsin, is committed to safely applying explosives and providing a safe workplace for its employees and all others at or near their worksites. As a requirement per the Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) for preventive measures and safety, Highway 50 (16th Street) at the bridge will be closed during each blasting process due to the project’s proximity to the 16th Street bridge.
A detour route will use R and Beech Streets, which have local access only between those roads and the bridge. Traffic will be allowed on both sides of the bridge, but there will be no crossing at the bridge until the blast is complete and all clear is given.
Semi-truck traffic must use Beech Street or R Street to John Williams Boulevard as the detour. Please avoid this area or take an alternate route unless you have business there.
Blasting Process Horn Sounds
A warning signal of a 1-minute series of long blasts 5 minutes before the blast signal.
A blasting signal series of short blasts 1 minute before the shot
All clear will be a prolonged horn blast following the inspection of the blast area
Highway 50 (16th Street) will be open for traffic at that point.
This process should last under one hour for each blasting occurrence.
The Milwaukee Trail will be closed from the U Street entrance off John Williams Blvd to the Wilson Park trail entrance onto the trail during the blast process.
Blast Schedule
Blasts are tentatively planned twice daily for approximately 20 working days, from May 29 to June 14. Tentative blast times are 10 a.m. until 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. until 3 p.m. This number and times could change with rock conditions and weather conditions. Emergency personnel and the postal service will be notified of these road closures. If you know of deliveries, please inform them of the closures. Please avoid these areas if possible. All businesses will be open during the road closures.
