LAWRENCE COUNTY- Lawrence County CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates) is a non-profit organization dedicated to supporting abused and neglected children. Trained volunteers advocate for these children’s best interests in court, striving to ensure safe, permanent homes. CASA plays a critical role in fostering a brighter future for vulnerable youth in the community. “Lawrence County CASA volunteers are representing the best interest of children,” according to Rich Kosmala, Lawrence County CASA Program Director. Over 40 children are waiting for a volunteer to help them.
To become a CASA volunteer and advocate for children in the court system due to abuse, you must have a driver’s license, be over 21 years old, and pass a criminal and child welfare background check. Volunteers will spend an average of 8-15 hours a month working with the assigned child to help them navigate the court system.
Training begins July 8 for those wanting to become part of CASA. The training is 30 hours in total, spread out over five weeks. The sessions will occur at Stonegate Arts and Education Center at 931 15th Street in Bedford every Tuesday and Thursday from 5:30 to 8 p.m. until August 8. The topics covered will equip you with the knowledge you need to help these children through difficult times when no child should be alone.
