PAOLI – The Orange County Historical Society met for its regular monthly meeting on May 28th at the Paoli Library.
Terry Cornwell updated the members on the work underway at the historic Lindley House. This includes the installation of new period-style storm windows to protect the original glass and historic fabric of the farmhouse. The Lindley House will also soon receive a brand-new exterior coat of paint.
Society President Robert Henderson provided updates on various projects to date. Henderson noted that plans were being finalized for the upcoming 50th Anniversary of the creation of the historic Thomas Elwood Lindley House Museum. A special commemoration event is set for July 27th from 1 p.m. until 3:30 p.m. at the farmhouse. The event will include guided house tours, special guests, refreshments, and a performance by the Lick Creek Band.
Henderson noted that work continues to progress on the renovation of the Historic OC Courthouse Clock Tower and that a celebration of sorts is being planned for its completion later this year.
Work with the Indiana State Library continues to preserve the historic Paoli newspaper collection. To date, papers published between 1883 and 1914 have been carefully removed from their bindings and scanned. At some point, OCHS will obtain copies of the scanned reels and deposit them for patron use at the Paoli Library.
The Orange County Historic Museum is open most Fridays and Saturdays from 10 am to 2 p.m. Other times are available by appointment. Guided tours of the Lindley House are available by appointment.
A general discussion was held to explore ways to partner or collaborate on the creation of a proposed African American History Museum in Paoli.
Henderson provided the program sharing the life of General William T. Spicely of Orleans.
The Society will meet again on June 25th at 7:00 p.m.
