BNL’s Bellush, Stiles advance to golf regional

BNL’s Tyler Bellush qualified for the IHSAA regional during the sectional at Cascades on Monday.

BLOOMINGTON – Bedford North Lawrence’s Tyler Bellush and Coleson Stiles advanced to the second stage of the IHSAA state tournament series during the sectional at Cascades on Monday.

Bellush and Stiles earned individual tickets to the regional at Country Oaks. The top three teams, plus the top three individuals who were not members of qualifying teams, advanced to the next round.

BNL finished fourth in the team competition. Bloomington South won the title with an incredible team score of 278 (setting a new sectional record while winning the crown for the 10th straight year), followed by Brownstown (309) and Bloomington North (315). The Stars carded 332.

Bellush fired a 78 while Stiles posted 80 to advance.

“They both played well,” BNL coach Trey Turner said. “After being 3-over through three holes, he did a great job of bouncing back. Coleson was steady all day. He had been struggling with consistency with his irons, but he hit them well today and had confidence in them.”

Parker Foddrill (86) and Dillon Lewis (88) completed the scoring for BNL.

Brown County’s Clay Austin was the third individual qualifier with 78.

South’s Happy Gilmore was the medalist with a sizzling 5-under 66 while teammate Luke Garrett fired a 69.

Country Oaks will host the regional on Thursday. The top three teams, plus the top three individuals who are not members of advancing teams, will qualify for the state finals at Prairie View Golf Club on June 11-12.
