BEDFORD – Lawrence County Sheriff’s Department Deputy Chris Griggs was patrolling State Road 60 West with other officers looking for a wanted man when he received information at 6:07 p.m. that Officer Kenton Carter stopped a gray Chrysler 300 driven by 38-year-old Anthony Henson, of Mitchell.
Captain Fleetwood, Sergeant Pope, and Officer Porter and Griggs arrived to assist.
Captain Fleetwood then noticed a firearm in plain view on the passenger seat and Henson was removed from the vehicle and detained.
Henson, by Indiana Code, is a serious violent offender and not allowed to possess a firearm. Henson told police that the man police were looking for asked him to go to his home and remove the firearm and other property for him. He said he was going to meet Devin Luchauer at his father’s house in Orleans and give him the property.
He said he would help locate Luchauer, who was wanted for questioning in an earlier battery investigation.
Henson allowed officers to search his vehicle. Police found a Winchester model 37A 16-guage shotgun and a box of shotgun shells, and a glass container that contained crystal meth.
Police then followed Henson to Burton Cemetery, about a mile away from the traffic stop. Henson was talking to someone on the phone attempting to locate Luchauer. While at the scene police learned Luchauer was at the Sheriff’s Department to turn himself in.
Luchauer was asked if he allowed Henson to enter his home and take the items police found. He said no and no one should have been inside his home. He said there were messages between him and Luchauer, but the app they use subscripts the messages and auto deletes them.
Police asked Henson if he had any proof that Luchauer had asked him to take the items from his home.
Police arrested Henson on charges of burglary, theft, possession of meth, and possession of a firearm by a serious violent felon.
Police inventoried the vehicle and found jewelry, bolt cutters, tools, clothing, electronics, comic books, card collections, shoes, a stamp collection, and other miscellaneous items.
Police again spoke to Luchauer, and again, he stressed he did not give Henson permission to remove items from his home. The shotgun belonged to Luchauer’s grandfather. He also confirmed many of the items in Henson’s vehicle were stolen from his house.
Henson was currently out on bond in Monroe County on a charge of burglary and was awaiting sentencing after pleading guilty to conspiracy to commit theft in Lawrence County. Police said he also had drug charges pending.
A hold was placed on the vehicle and Stone City Service & Collision Center towed the vehicle.
