High-speed pursuit lands Bedford man in jail

BEDFORD— The Indiana State Police initiated a Thursday evening pursuit that resulted in the arrest of a Bloomington man.

Trooper Caroline Harding was conducting a traffic patrol on SR37 near Harrodsburg in Monroe County when she observed a silver 2006 Hyundai Sonata approaching southbound at a high rate of speed. She activated her red/blue emergency lights to initiate a traffic stop. Still, the driver, later identified as David K. Cobb, Age 39, of Bloomington, refused to stop and increased his vehicle speed. Trooper Harding contacted the Indiana State Police Post Bloomington and advised she was in an active pursuit with speeds reaching more than 100 miles per hour. Cobb continued southbound into Lawrence County in an attempt to evade Trooper Harding.

The Lawrence County Sheriff’s Office assisted when a deputy deployed stop sticks to de-escalate the pursuit on SR37 near the Oolitic intersection on SR37. Cobb maneuvered his Sonota around the deployed sticks and continued southbound toward Bedford. He voluntarily stopped his vehicle on the right side of the roadway near the Fifth Street intersection.

During the investigation, Trooper Harding determined Cobb was impaired and a prior suspended driver. Following field sobriety exercises and an administered certified breath test, Cobb was arrested on the following charges:

  • Resisting Law Enforcement, a Level 6 Felony
  • Operating a Vehicle While Intoxicated Endangerment/Previous Conviction within 7 years, a Level 6 Felony
  • Driving While Suspended, a Class A Misdemeanor
  • Operator Never License, a Class C Misdemeanor
  • Reckless Driving, a Class C Misdemeanor

Cobb was issued citations for additional traffic violations. He was transported to the Lawrence County Jail, where his custody was transferred.
