BLOOMINGTON – The Monroe County Board of Commissioners signed a Local Disaster Emergency Declaration Tuesday after the county sustained widespread damage during storms.
According to Monroe County Deputy Director Justin L. Baker, excessive rain and wind damage have impacted or threatened much of the area. A gust of 78 mph was reported at 4:12 p.m. Tuesday in Bloomington.
Before the disaster was declared, officials issued a travel advisory in Monroe County because heavy debris had fallen into roadways during the storms.
Two Herons Marina in Bloomington posted on Facebook Tuesday night that the entire marina has been “disconnected from land” due to the severe weather.
“The marina was severely damaged by today’s storms. There is no power, no sewer, no water lines, and the entire marina is disconnected from land,” the social media post said. “We will provide further updates about boat rentals as soon as we are able.”
At 10:00 p.m., Duke Energy reported that more than 45,000 people in Bloomington and the surrounding area were without power.
South Central REMC, addressed outages in the north part of Monroe County. At 10:00 p.m., 878 customers were without power.
Utility District of Western Indiana REMC crews addressed outages in southern and western Monroe County and around Monroe Lake. According to its website, about 268 customers were without power at 10:00 p.m.
Wind gusts of more than 60 mph had mangled power lines, poles, and other electrical equipment. The company reported that its crews are making repairs where possible, though power restoration times may be subject to change as crews are still thoroughly assessing the damage.
Martin County reported that Spout Springs Road from Shoals to State Road 550 was closed due to downed trees and utility lines.
Tree damage was also reported in and near Terre Haute and Knox County.
