Open alcohol container in vehicle lands man in jail on OWI charges

HELTONVILLE – On Wednesday, June 26, a Springville man was arrested after Lawrence County Sheriff’s Department Deputy Benton Trueblood stopped him for failing to use his turn signal and found him smelling of alcohol.

Indiana State Police Trooper Cody Brown assisted with the traffic stop at State Road 58 and Todd Lane.

Police say the driver, 47-year-old Brandon Godsey, smelled of alcohol, had glassy eyes and slurred speech, and was unable to stand up straight. Police found an open alcoholic beverage in the vehicle.

Godsey failed several field sobriety tests and had a blood-alcohol level of 0.228 percent on a portable breath test. He was transported to IU Health Bedford Hospital for a blood draw.

Godsey was transported to jail on charges of operating a vehicle while intoxicated and OWI with a prior conviction.
