Obituary: Sharon Kay McHargue

October 23, 1945 – July 2, 2024

Sharon Kay McHargue, 78, of Mitchell, passed peacefully at 10:10 p.m. on Tuesday, July 2, 2024, at Stonebridge Health Campus with her family by her side.

Born October 23, 1945, she was the daughter of Emery and Wilma (Cooper) Sheeks Graham. She was a lifelong resident of Mitchell and a 1963 graduate of the class of Mitchell High School. Sharon worked at Brass Manufacturing in Mitchell before marrying the love of her life, Michael D. McHargue, on September 4, 1964, and he preceded her in death on September 20, 2016.

Sharon was a homemaker, a volunteer at her daughters’ schools, and caretaker of her parents and step-father William Graham. After succeeding her mother, she was on the board for many years of the Sheeks Cemetery in Mitchell. She enjoyed sewing, quilting, cooking, playing cards, traveling to casinos, eating out with family and friends, and attending the Huron Baptist Church with her dear friends Brenda and Skip Mathews.

She loved spending time with her friends and neighbors, especially Charla and Nelson Terrell and John and Marilyn Lantis, family, and most of all, her four grandchildren, whom she cared for above and beyond. She and Mike always happily attended every activity of every grandchild.

Survivors include daughters Kathy (Tom) Scarlett of Bedford and Amy McHargue of Alabama; grandchildren Kaylin Norris, Nic McHargue, Tyler Scarlett, and Kyla Scarlett; sister-in-law, Susan Wolter, and brother-in-law, William McHargue; and several nieces, and nephews. Even though she was an only child, her parents came from large families, giving her many aunts, uncles, and cousins. Sharon used to say half-jokingly that she was related to at least half of Mitchell.

Her parents and husband preceded her in death.

The graveside service will be at 1:00 p.m. Saturday, July 6, at Sheeks Cemetery, with Pastor William “Skip” Mathews officiating. The family will receive friends from 11:00 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. Saturday at Chastain Funeral Home & Cremation Center.

Memorial gifts can be made in Sharon’s memory to Sheeks Cemetery.
