BEDFORD – A Bloomington man was arrested on Tuesday, July 9, after Indiana State Trooper Ben Burris stopped his vehicle for a non-working headlight.
Trooper Burris was parked in the medical of State Road 37 near 5th Street around 10:50 p.m. when he noticed a 2003 blue GMC Envoy traveling north with only one working headlight.
The trooper stopped the vehicle. The driver told Trooper Burris his name was Steven Nowaczyk. However, the Bureau of Motor Vehicle photo did not match the driver.
Trooper Burris returned to the vehicle and asked for the driver’s social security number and address. The driver said he couldn’t remember his social security number and gave a fake address.
The driver told Trooper Burris he had recently gone through a divorce and gave the trooper the woman’s name. The trooper called the woman and learned the driver was 39-year-old Jared Elmore.
The dispatcher then provided a photo of Elmore, who matched the driver.
Elmore admitted he lied because there was marijuana in the vehicle, and he was trying to avoid any criminal charges using his real name. Elmore said the Nowaczy was a person he found online and remembered to use his information for a situation like this.
His passenger was Kayla Maggard. She was arrested on numerous drug charges after the trooper found marijuana and other drugs in the vehicle which was registered to Maggard.
Elmore was arrested on charges of identity deception and refusal to identify himself.
