Sgt. Max Uebelhoer was on patrol and stopped facing east at the red traffic light at 16th Street and Edgewood Drive. While stopped, he noticed a black Nissan Altima traveling west and approaching the intersection. The vehicle activated its hazard lights and continued through the intersection while the light was still red and traveling west. Sgt. Uebelhore turned his police vehicle around and initiated a traffic stop. The vehicle stopped in the IU Health Bedford Hospital emergency room lot.

A female driver stepped out of the vehicle and immediately apologized. She reported she was trying to get her sister to the hospital. The sister exited the front passenger seat crying and hunched over in pain. She was escorted into the emergency room via wheelchair by IU Health Bedford Hospital staff.

The driver told police she had received a call from an attendant at Circle K at 729 16th Street reporting her sister had arrived at the store and was injured by her husband.

The injured woman was picked up by her brother.

The domestic battery had taken place at a home in the 1000 block of G Street.

The injured woman told police her husband had picked her up from work at 11:00 p.m. the previous night, and there was an argument. She felt her husband may have been under the influence of drugs. Martin became angry, and while she was sitting on the couch watching television, he pulled her off the couch by her hair and dragged her into a bathroom.

He then pinned her down, smacked her in the face, and choked her.

Martin told the woman she could leave, but he would stop her each time she attempted to leave.

The altercation moved outside of the home when the woman attempted to get into her vehicle. When she attempted to enter the vehicle, Martin picked her up and dragged her by the hair into the side yard. When she struggled to get away, he covered her mouth and nose, and she could not breathe.

She was able to escape and ran to Circle K for help.

Police said she had visible marks from the attacks.

Officers responded to the 1000 block of G Street in an attempt to locate Martin but were unable to find him.

The information was forwarded to the Lawrence County Prosecutor’s Department, and a warrant was issued for his arrest.
