Bluespring Caverns celebrates 50 years of wonder

BEDFORD – Bluespring Caverns is commemorating its 50th anniversary this year, marking a half-century of showcasing the natural beauty of underground rivers and formations.

Founded in the fall of 1973 by experienced cave explorers Jim Richards, Sam Frushour, and Bob Hosley, Bluespring Caverns opened its doors to the public in November 1974. After securing a lease with long-time cave owners George and Eva Colglazier, the trio embarked on a year-long construction project to make the caverns accessible to visitors. Richards and Sam still own the caverns, along with Katherine Key, following Bob Hosley’s passing.

The initial construction efforts included building pathways, stairways, platforms, and a boat dock within the cave, as well as creating a visitor center with restrooms and a gift shop in an existing pole barn on the property. Additional improvements, such as landscaping and surface walkways, were also implemented.

Over the years, Bluespring Caverns has continued to evolve and expand its offerings. The park now features a larger visitor center with a gemstone sluice, a picnic shelter, and a recently completed maintenance and events center. Within the caverns, four custom aluminum tour boats with LED lighting and electric motors allow up to 60 visitors to explore the extensive underground river.

Bluespring Caverns has been actively involved in protecting its natural resources through individual efforts and by supporting organizations such as the National Caves Association, the American Cave Conservation Association, the Indiana Karst Conservancy, and the Sycamore Land Trust.

Bluespring Caverns is planning a three-day celebration on November 1-3 to celebrate its 50th anniversary. The event will include a special party for past staff members, volunteers, and friends of the caverns, featuring food, refreshments, and various programs.

As Bluespring Caverns looks toward the future, the park’s management team is committed to enhancing the visitor experience and preserving the natural beauty of the caverns. They are also actively seeking talented and dedicated staff members to join their team and share their passion for underground exploration with future generations.
