Obituary: Eddie W. Fitzgerald

October 6, 1941 – September 9, 2024

Eddie W. Fitzgerald, 82, of Bedford, passed away at 10:06 a.m. on Monday, September 9, 2024, at his residence.

Born October 6, 1941, in Oolitic, he was the son of Kelsie and Wyrtis R. (Hughes) Fitzgerald. He graduated from Oolitic High School with the class of 1959. He married Gaye Hardgrove on June 3, 1962, and she survives. He was employed as an installer at Western Electric from 1960 to 1981. He founded Fitzgerald Excavating from 1980 to the present and was co-owner of Limestone Catering from 2002 to 2009. He was of the Baptist faith.

Survivors include his wife, Gaye, of Bedford; two daughters, Kelly Fitzgerald Cobb and Kim Deckard-Morris, both of Bedford; five grandsons, Ryan (Dr. Brandy) Deckard, of Bloomington, Tyler (Stacie) Deckard, of Ohio, Evan (Cassidy) Deckard, of Noblesville, Sam (Christian) Cobb, of Seymour, Mac (Kayla) Cobb, of Bedford; eight great-grandchildren, Olivia Newlin, Max Deckard, Will Deckard, Ava Deckard, Mia Deckard, Bryer Smith, Gibson Cobb, CeCe Cobb; bonus grandchildren, Chris, Bethany, and Talia Bell, Jordan, Mindy, Bennett, Beau, and Knight Morris.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a grandson, John Kelsie Fitzgerald Deckard (in infancy), a son-in-law, Phil Morris, and sisters, Janet Jeffries and Joy Darlene Fitzgerald.

Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, September 16th, in the Elmwood Chapel of the Day & Carter Mortuary, with Bobby Williams and Kelly Fitzgerald Cobb officiating. Burial will follow in Hilltop Cemetery. Visitation will be from 2:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. on Sunday, September 15th, and from 9:00 a.m. until the hour of service on Monday at the Day & Carter Mortuary.
