Bloomington teen faces charges after knife incident near McDonald’s

BLOOMINGTON — A 16-year-old student from Bloomington High School South is in juvenile detention following an attempted robbery incident that unfolded near a local McDonald’s.

The incident occurred on South Walnut Street after school when the two students walked to McDonald’s. According to police, the victim reported that after placing his order, the 16-year-old suspect brandished a six-inch knife and demanded $5.

The victim, unharmed, left the restaurant and contacted his parents, who subsequently reported the incident to law enforcement. Police were able to identify the suspect after reviewing surveillance footage from the restaurant, which captured the suspect with the knife. A search of the suspect’s backpack revealed the weapon seen in the video.

The teenager, who is not being named due to his status as a minor, faces charges of attempted robbery and intimidation with a deadly weapon. These charges would be considered felonies if he were tried as an adult. The suspect has been taken to a juvenile detention center pending further legal proceedings.

The Bloomington Police Department is continuing to investigate the case. The school and local community have been informed of the incident, and authorities said there are no further safety concerns related to this case.
