NORTH VERNON – Bedford North Lawrence finished second in the boys race during the Ray Gerkin Invitational cross country meet on Saturday.

The Stars totaled 66 points, while Jennings County won its own meet with 63.

In the girls race, BNL’s Paige Voigtschild won the individual race while BNL finished third in a tight battle for the top spot. Seymour won that title with 46 points, followed by Charlestown (47) and the Stars (50).

BNL placed three runners in the top 10 during the boys race. Tucker Inman was sixth in 17:00.8, Jonah Bailey was seventh in 17:04.2, and Nick Lindley was ninth in 17:16.0.

“We came into this race knowing we can win races, and just came up a little short,” BNL coach Nick Boyd said. “I am proud that, as a team, we have begun to see our opportunities to win. Now we have to find ways to close out races when the opportunities arise.

“Our entire team ran well on a narrow course. There aren’t a lot of places to pass out there, but everyone found ways to keep advancing. We will need this consistency as we continue.”

Jennings County’s Kraedyn Young was the overall winner in 15:47.9.

In the girls race, Voigtschild set the pace for the field, crossing the finish line in 20:17.4.

BNL also recorded quality races from Claire Voigtschild (fifth in 21:37.6) and Francesca Orozco (11th in 22:27.8).

“Our girls continue to build confidence in their racing abilities and staying focused during the entire race,” BNL co-coach Amy Greenan said. “We asked Paige to take it out hard and she didn’t disappoint. Claire went out hard too, and ended up with a seven-second PR.

“We’re going to be doing some fine tuning to keep those times dropping as we approach tournament time.”

The Stars will host the Ted Fox Invitational on Sept. 28.
