Columbus man facing attempted murder charge after firing gun at exwife

COLUMBUS – A tense situation unfolded in a quiet neighborhood yesterday when a man allegedly chased a woman out of her home and opened fire, leading to a standoff with police.

According to court records, 59-year-old Brent Clayburn is charged with attempted murder, three felony counts of criminal confinement, and a misdemeanor count of domestic battery.

The charges stem from an incident on Sunday, September 15, on Silver Fox Drive. Police responded to a shots fired call.

The female victim told police she heard the doorbell and found Clayburn, her ex-husband, standing outside and let him in. Clayburn quickly punched her and said “something to the effect of, ‘One of us is going to die tonight,’” according to court documents.

The woman ran into the attached garage and tried to go underneath the garage door. She said Clayburn grabbed her by the hair and tried to pull her back toward the house.

According to witnesses and police reports, the woman ran to a neighbor’s house with Clayburn in pursuit. Clayburn allegedly fired multiple shots in their direction.

Fortunately, no injuries were reported.

After the shooting, Clayburn retreated into the woman’s residence, prompting a swift response from local law enforcement. Officers quickly established a perimeter around the property, and a SWAT team was called to the scene.

Negotiators worked diligently to communicate with Clayburn, eventually arranging his peaceful surrender. The standoff ended without further incident.

Police found three handguns, a collapsible rifle, two extra magazines, and a backpack containing several boxes of ammunition inside the home, all of which belonged to Clayburn, according to court documents.

Investigators discovered eight bullet casings on the property and located seven bullet holes in the neighbor’s garage door.

Those facing criminal charges are considered innocent unless convicted through due legal proceedings. Accusations alone do not imply guilt; the judicial system will evaluate the presented evidence to reach a verdict.
