Obituary: Rachel Lavena Allen

October 1, 1942 – September 23, 2024

Rachel Lavena Allen, 81, of Orleans, died peacefully at home on Monday, September 23, 2024.

Born October 1, 1942, in Willow Valley of Martin County, she was the second oldest child of John Paul and Edith (Patton) Jones. Rachel married Kenneth Lee Allen on January 28, 2017, and he survives.

Rachel lived a country girl’s life, but her personal flare and sophistication were far from simple.  She was a classy lady with style, sophistication, and a genuine sweetness that won over many a formal and informal setting.

She attended Mitchell Community Schools and later graduated from Indiana Business College.  She was a loving mother, wife, and caregiver.  Her accomplishments included interior design for numerous homes in the Lawrence County and Orange County areas and many years as an Activities Director at Mitchell Manor Nursing Home in Mitchell, Indiana.

She was a faithful servant of God and a member of Grace Tabernacle Church in Orleans, Indiana.

Survivors include her husband, Kenneth Allen of Orleans; children, Lynnette Fleetwood of Mitchell, Jimmy Dean (Diane) Fleetwood of French Lick, Warren (Alana)  Fleetwood of  Fort Branch, David (Amy) Fleetwood of Hardinsburg, Ryan (Holly) Fleetwood of Mitchell, and Susan (Mike) Backherms of Mitchell; 17 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; 4 great-great-grandchildren; siblings,  Brenda “Joyce” Heath of Sacramento, California, Connie Coulter of Mitchell, Ronald Jones of Hemet, California, Randel Jones of Mitchell, Judy Birch of Orleans, Daniel Jones of Bloomington, Penny Hardin of Paoli; several nieces and nephews; and sister-in-law, Shirley Jones of Mitchell.

Her parents, brothers Mike Jones and James Jones, and in-laws Frank Heath, Kay Jones, Judy Jones, Don Birch, Dixie Jones, and Jessie Hardin preceded her in death.

The funeral service will be at 1:00 p.m. Thursday, September 26, in the Memorial Chapel of Chastain Funeral Home & Cremation Center, with Pastor Daniel Jones officiating. Burial will be in Mitchell Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 11:00 a.m. until the time of service on Thursday at the funeral home.
