BNL clips Columbus East in HHC consolation

COLUMBUS – Bedford North Lawrence conquered Columbus East for the second time this season, posting a 4-1 triumph in the consolation round of the Hoosier Hills Conference Tournament on Wednesday.

The Stars (3-15) swept the doubles while advancing to the fifth-place match. BNL also decked the Olympians 4-1 on Aug. 26.

BNL’s Orion Hill and Neal Patel toppled Trevor Ernst and Micah Wettschurack 6-0, 6-1 at No.1 doubles, while Micah Carter and Wyatt Corbin stopped Jonas Newell and Carson Hartsook 6-2, 6-1 at No.2.

BNL also won the lower singles. Braxton Fugate won a second-set tiebreaker for a 6-2, 7-6 (7-2) victory over Owen Kirk at No.2, and Asher Thompson stopped Michael Reed 6-0, 6-0 at No.3.

“It was the same results as last time, although this time they got done a lot quicker,” BNL coach Ian Dillman said. “They knew their opponents and were able to capitalize off that.

“Asher played solid. Same with both doubles teams. They came determined and wanted that win. Braxton did great in the first set but let up in the second, but he was able to finish strong with the support of the team behind him.”

BNL will host New Albany on Thursday in the final round.
