A day in history: September 29

BEDFORD – September 29 has witnessed a number of significant events throughout history. In 1789, the first U.S. Congress adjourned after passing the Act to Establish Troops, officially creating the United States Army. A decade later, in 1829, London’s Metropolitan Police became the first official police department in the world.

The 20th century saw several important events on September 29. In 1941, the Babi Yar massacre occurred, resulting in the deaths of thousands of Jews near Kiev. The first live coast-to-coast televised sporting event, a college football game, was broadcast in 1951. In 1954, the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN) was established.  

The late 20th century saw significant advancements in technology. In 1972, Canada launched its first satellite. The Discovery space shuttle mission, the first after the Challenger disaster, took place in 1988.  

On this day in history, Canada launched Anik A1, the first satellite to ever be launched by Canada.
