Thousands of Verizon customers report stuck in SOS mode

INDIANA—Verizon has confirmed that its cell service was restored after an outage on Monday sparked a flurry of customer complaints across the US.

Users on Verizon’s verified account on X said they experienced a lack of cell service and an inability to connect to the network around 11 a.m. ET. Many Verizon iPhone customers complained that their phones had been stuck in “SOS” mode for hours, allowing only emergency calls via satellite.

There were roughly 100,000 customer reports on DownDetector, a site that tracks complaints about service outages, though it’s unclear exactly how many customers were impacted.

“Verizon engineers have fully restored network disruption that impacted some customers. Service has returned to normal levels,” Verizon said in a statement. “If you are still having issues, we recommend restarting your device. We know how much people rely on Verizon, and we apologize for any inconvenience. We appreciate your patience.”

A telecommunications expert told CNN last month that network outages are typically caused by a combination of three issues: overloaded networks in major cities, software updates that have gone haywire, and various technical problems.
