Father and son arrested for alleged drug trafficking at Indiana worksite for inmates

SCOTTSBURG – A father and son duo from Scottsburg are facing drug-related charges following an incident at a worksite for incarcerated individuals on September 20.

According to the Scott County Sheriff’s Office, Deputy Tim Applegate was overseeing an Inmate Trustee Program crew when he noticed a suspicious individual repeatedly circling the area. The individual, later identified as 61-year-old Charles Simpson, was seen entering and exiting a restroom near the worksite before quickly departing.

After calling for backup, Applegate and other deputies discovered controlled substances inside the restroom. Investigators later determined that Charles Simpson had allegedly coordinated the “drug drop” with his son, 36-year-old Justin Simpson, who was part of the work crew under Applegate’s supervision.

Authorities swiftly arrested Charles Simpson, charging him with multiple offenses, including conspiracy to traffic with an incarcerated person, conspiracy to deal marijuana, possession of marijuana, possession of methamphetamine, maintaining a common nuisance, and possession of paraphernalia.

Justin Simpson was subsequently removed from the Inmate Trustee Program and is facing charges of conspiracy to traffic with an incarcerated person and conspiracy to deal marijuana.
