PAOLI—The Paoli Rams high school football team received widespread acclaim for its sportsmanship following a challenging game last week. This demonstrates that true victory extends beyond the scoreboard.
On September 27, the Rams faced the Eastern Greene Thunderbirds in a matchup marred by the remnants of Hurricane Helene, resulting in driving rain and muddy conditions. Despite the weather, Paoli triumphed with a decisive 38-12 victory, amassing 341 rushing yards and scoring five touchdowns.
However, it was the team’s actions off the field that indeed caught the community’s attention. Following the game, Principal Ed Wagner received a heartfelt note from Eastern Greene Athletic Director Aaron Buskirk, highlighting the team’s exemplary behavior. In his message, Buskirk commended the Paoli players and coaching staff for taking the initiative to clean the locker rooms they used in the Eastern Greene gymnasium. They swept and mopped the floors before boarding their bus back home.
“I appreciate their willingness to do this without being asked to do so and to help our custodial crew out after a very muddy night!” Buskirk wrote in an Exemplary Behavior Report submitted to the Indiana High School Athletic Association (IHSAA).
Paoli Jr. and Sr. High School shared Buskirk’s message on Facebook, further amplifying the praise for the Rams. The report recognized the entire team for their actions, reinforcing the values of leadership and community service.
As the Rams prepare to continue their perfect season with a home game against Crawford County this Friday, they have a reputation that reflects their athletic prowess and commitment to being positive role models on and off the field. Meanwhile, Eastern Greene, currently at 2-4, will host Illinois’ Red Hill High School in their next game.
Principal Ed Wagner thanked Coach Dittmer and the Rams team, saying, “Thank you, RAMS, for representing PHS positively, even when you are far from home.” The actions of the Paoli Rams exemplify the spirit of sportsmanship, proving that teamwork and respect can shine through even the most challenging conditions.
