Stars settle into 15th place after first round of state finals

CARMEL – Bedford North Lawrence settled into 15th place during the first round of the IHSAA state championships at Prairie View on Friday.

The Stars, making their third straight appearance in the finals and 11th in program history, posted a team score of 368 in the 18-team field. No.2 Noblesville claimed the overnight lead in the 36-hole event with 310, while No.3 Zionsville was second with 315.

Sammie Nusbaum paced BNL with an 85 that included eight pars on the long, difficult, demanding course that played 5,700 yards. Ellie Horton, the lone senior in the lineup, carded an 88 with seven pars.

The other Stars struggled. Kinleigh Root finished with 95 (which included three triple bogeys), while freshmen Emma Voris (100) and Emma Endris (109) endured a rough day during their first appearance in the state finals.

Floyd Central’s Paige Giovenco shared the first-round individual lead with Westfield’s Addi Kooi and Zionsville freshman Taylor Snively after they carved out even-par 72s. Giovenco had three birdies to offset a double on the par-3 sixth hole, while Kooi had four birdies, including three straight on holes 16-18. Snively had two birdies and two bogeys during her steady round.

BNL will compete in the second round today.
