CARMEL – Bedford North Lawrence finished tied for 16th in the IHSAA state championship at Prairie View on Saturday.

The Stars, making their third straight appearance in the final stage of the state tournament series, carded a second-day total of 368 (identical to their first-round score) and posted a 36-hole score of 736. Zionsville won the team title with scores of 315-312 for a two-day finish of 627, five shots ahead of Noblesville in the 18-team field.

“We have another state finals experience under our belt, and I am so proud of these girls for another impressive season,” BNL coach Kori Johnston said. “The state finals tournament is a big test of golfing ability. It’s longer than anything we play in the regular season and requires some strategy along the way. Unfortunately it got the best of some of us this time, but we plan to be back next year for a rematch.”

Sammie Nusbaum paced the Stars with rounds of 85-84 to finish tied for 46th in the field at 169. Her second round included eight pars.

“Sammie really shined this weekend,” Johnston said. “Her game in general has improved immensely and she’s only a sophomore. She’s proving to be a player to watch, and I’m excited to see what the next two years hold.”

Ellie Horton, the lone senior in the lineup, posted round of 88-87.

“Ellie finished up her impressive high school career this weekend, and definitely left a big mark on our program,” Johnston said. “I couldn’t be more proud of her. I don’t think there’s a single tournament that goes by where I don’t receive a compliment about her from another team’s coach or player. She will be very missed next season.”

The rest of the scoring from the Stars included Kinleigh Root (95-93) and the freshman duo of Emma Voris (100-104) and Emma Endris (109-104).

Zionsville freshman Taylor Snively was the medalist with rounds of 72-72. Castle star Ashley Kirkland was the state runner-up for the third straight year with rounds of 77-69, and she was named the Mental Attitude Award winner.
