BEDFORD — Micayla Patton and Billy Patton, residents in the 700 block of Old US Highway 50 East, have been charged with animal neglect following a detailed investigation by the Lawrence County Sheriff’s Department. The charges stem from multiple incidents involving their German Shepherd, Sophie, who has suffered severe injuries over an extended period.
According to an affidavit filed by Animal Control Officer Chad Hillenburg, the investigation began on April 30, 2024, when dispatch received a report of a seriously injured dog at the couple’s residence. Upon arrival, Hillenburg observed a black and tan female German Shepherd with a significant injury to her left leg. Neighbors reported that the dog had been hit by a car in September 2023, but despite being taken for veterinary care, the injury had not been adequately treated.
Subsequent reports of Sophie’s condition escalated the situation. On June 18, 2024, a neighbor reported that the dog was tethered outside with a swollen leg and appeared distressed. Hillenburg attempted to contact the owners but received no response. Further incidents led to Sophie being found loose in the neighborhood, prompting Hillenburg to transport her to the White River Humane Society for care.
Despite receiving corrective action notices requiring veterinary care and proper shelter, Micayla Patton later informed Hillenburg that she could not secure treatment for Sophie due to financial constraints. In a subsequent encounter on August 12, 2024, Micayla acknowledged that Sophie had not received necessary veterinary attention since the initial notice was issued.
During the investigation, Dr. Alissa Allen, the attending veterinarian, reported that Sophie had sustained multiple abrasions and open wounds, with potential nerve damage that may require amputation of her leg. The dog had not been returned for follow-up care despite recommendations for further evaluation.
The Pattons now face charges of animal neglect under Indiana Code 35-46-3-7, classified as a Class A misdemeanor.
Officer Hillenburg requested a warrant for the arrest of Micayla and Billy Patton. The Pattons were arrested on that warrant on October 24. Sophie was under the care of the White River Humane Society.
Those facing criminal charges are considered innocent unless convicted through due legal proceedings. Accusations alone do not imply guilt; the judicial system will evaluate the presented evidence to reach a verdict.
