BEDFORD – The Bedford Police Department responded to a report of a suspicious person in the roadway on the evening of October 27.
Officers were dispatched to the intersection of 18th and I Street after a concerned citizen observed a male potentially under the influence of alcohol. Upon arrival, Officers Blackburn and Manke encountered a man who matched the provided description.
A male witness stated that an intoxicated male had walked directly in front of his vehicle, causing him to swerve to avoid a collision. He noted that the male, 53-year-old Daniel Yarberry, then approached his car, threatening him verbally, and claimed to have seen him with a drink, describing it as a “shooter.”
Police say Yarberry exhibited signs of intoxication, including glassy, bloodshot eyes, slurred speech, and a lack of balance. As officers attempted to engage Yarberry, he began to walk away despite multiple commands to stop. When Officer Blackburn tried to detain him, Yarberry resisted by pulling away forcefully. This led to a physical struggle, during which officers were ultimately able to bring Yarberry to the ground and place him in handcuffs.
Further complicating matters, Yarberry resisted being secured in the patrol vehicle, obstructing the entrance with his foot. Officers had to assist him in getting into the car for medical clearance and transport to IU Health. While at the hospital, Yarberry continued to exhibit disruptive behavior, yelling at both officers and hospital staff. He was transported to the Lawrence County Jail without incident following medical clearance.
Yarberry is facing charges of public intoxication and resisting arrest by force.
Those facing criminal charges are considered innocent unless convicted through due legal proceedings. Accusations alone do not imply guilt; the judicial system will evaluate the presented evidence to reach a verdict.
