INDIANA – The Free Community Tax Service, serving Brown, Monroe, and Owen counties, has launched its annual recruitment drive for volunteer “Tax Heroes” following a remarkable 2024 tax season that generated over $1 million in refunds and credits for local families.
Last year’s volunteer team helped file more than 800 tax returns, saving low—and moderate-income residents nearly $200,000 in tax preparation fees. The service operates from January through April and provides free federal and state income tax preparation assistance across three counties.
“Our Tax Heroes program demonstrates how volunteer efforts can directly impact families moving from poverty to possibility,” said a program representative. “The financial benefits extend beyond tax preparation savings – they represent real opportunities for local families.”
Volunteer Opportunities
The program is seeking volunteers for several key roles:
- Client screening during intake
- Tax return preparation
- Quality assurance through peer review
“No prior experience is required,” emphasized the program coordinator. “We provide comprehensive training in income tax law and tax preparation, and all volunteers become IRS-certified through our program.”
Flexible Commitment, Meaningful Results
The program offers volunteers:
- Flexible scheduling options
- Professional development opportunities
- Resume-building experience
- Membership in a supportive volunteer community
This initiative is part of United Way of South Central’s broader mission to transform families from poverty to possibility, offering volunteers a chance to make a direct impact on their community’s economic health.
