ISP Trooper investigates fatal vehicle accident on US 41

SULLIVAN CO. – The Indiana State Police is investigating a crash between two passenger vehicles that occurred on Sunday, November 10, at the junction of US 41 and Section Street, claiming the life of one individual.

A preliminary investigation by Trooper Justin Bell indicates that at approximately 9:30 a.m., a 2017 Chevrolet driven by Nancy Bright, 71, of Sullivan, was traveling southbound on US 41.  Bright turned eastbound on Section Street, proceeding into the northbound lanes of US 41, into the direct path of a 2021 Nissan driven by Michael Thomas, 56, of Farmersburg. Thomas applied his brakes and attempted an evasive driving maneuver but could not avoid the collision.  The collision force caused one passenger vehicle to stop on US 41 in the northbound lanes and one to go to the east side of US 41 and off the roadway.

As a result of the crash, Bright sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced deceased at the scene by the Sullivan County Coroner’s Office.

Michael Thomas was transported to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Drugs and alcohol are not believed to be a contributing factor of the accident.

ISP Trooper Rondell Shelton of the Putnamville State Police Post is reconstructing the accident with the assistance of other troopers.
