Lawrence County is ready for first snowfall of the Season: Winter Weather, Wind, and Cold Temperatures expected Thursday

LAWRENCE CO. – Lawrence County is gearing up for the season’s first snow chance this week as weather conditions sharply turn toward winter.

The day began with mild temperatures and rain on Tuesday, but a noticeable shift in weather came by Wednesday morning, with showers transitioning into cooler air. By Thursday, residents can expect the first taste of winter as temperatures plunge and colder, sharper air moves across the state. Rain and snow showers are possible throughout the day, with winds gusting up to 40 mph, making it feel much colder due to wind chills.

Highs on Thursday are only expected to reach 37 degrees, and the combination of wind and wintry mix will create a chill that will feel much colder than the actual temperature. While most roads are unlikely to see significant snow accumulation due to warm pavement temperatures, grassy areas, and elevated surfaces could see light snow accumulations. Early Friday morning, as temperatures drop to around 30°F, road conditions may become slick in some places, creating potential issues.

Highway Superintendent Brian Sowder said county crews are already preparing by stockpiling sand and salt to treat roads as needed.

Emergency Management Director Valerie Luchauer also reminded motorists to prepare for winter conditions by ensuring their vehicles are equipped with a winter emergency kit.

Here is a list of essential items to keep in the winter emergency kit:

Residents are encouraged to stay informed and take necessary precautions as winter weather begins to affect Lawrence County.
