Pedistrian struck and killed, Indiana State Police investigating

PERU – On November 18, 2024, at approximately 5:00 p.m., Troopers from the Indiana State Police Peru District and Deputies from the Miami County Sheriff’s Office responded to a report of a pedestrian struck by a vehicle in Peru, IN.

A preliminary investigation by Trooper Russell revealed a 2007 Ford Focus driven by James Sturgill, 53, of Wabash, IN, was traveling eastbound on Wabash Road, east of Paw Paw Pike in Peru, IN. Sturgill’s vehicle struck a pedestrian, who was identified to be Beverly Bowen, 80, from Peru, IN.

Despite life-saving measures, Bowen was pronounced deceased at the crash scene. Notification to the family of the deceased has been made. Sturgill did not sustain any injuries.

The information above is preliminary; the investigation is ongoing, and no further information will be released. At this time, alcohol and drugs are not believed to be a factor in the crash. However, toxicology results are pending at this time.

Trooper Russell was assisted on the scene by troopers from the Peru Post, Miami County Sheriff’s Office, Peru Fire Department, Duke’s EMS, Miami County EMA, and Miami County Coroner’s Officer.
