Greene County Purdue Extension offering free class for maintaining food plots and ideal habitat for deer Dec. 19

GREENE COUNTYPurdue Extension in Greene County will hold a free class on food plots and maintaining ideal deer habitat on December 19 from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m. at the Greene County Fairgrounds, 4503 W State Rd 54, Bloomfield. This two-hour course will cover many topics, including the benefits of a food plot, seed selection, and more.

Food plots can provide many advantages for deer and the environment, including:

  • Improved deer health: Food plots can provide deer with the nutrients they need, such as protein, carbohydrates, and minerals. This can improve the health of the deer population, including the condition of does, the survival of fawns, and the size of antlers.
  • Increased hunting success: Food plots can create areas where deer congregate, making them easier to hunt.
  • Increased sightings: Food plots can attract deer to an area, increasing the likelihood of seeing them.
  • Increased likelihood of seeing mature bucks: Food plots can increase the chance of seeing mature deer with large racks.
  • Supplemental food source: Food plots can provide a supplemental food source for deer when natural food sources are scarce, such as in late summer, winter, or early spring.
  • Benefits other wildlife: Food plots can also attract other wildlife, such as birds, doves, quail, pheasants, and turkeys.
  • Environmental benefits: Food plots can improve habitats and ecosystems.
