ORLEANS—The Orleans Chamber of Commerce is putting the finishing touches on plans for its highly anticipated 14th Annual “Orleans Christmas on the Square,” which will take place this Saturday, December 14th, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. in Historic Congress Square.
The event promises a variety of family-friendly activities and holiday cheer for all ages, making it the perfect way to celebrate the season in downtown Orleans.
Festivities Begin with Santa’s Grand Arrival
The holiday magic will kick off at 5:00 p.m. when Santa Claus makes his grand entrance aboard the town’s restored 1926 Peter Pirsch Firetruck, arriving at the beautifully decorated bandstand in Congress Square.
After his arrival, Santa will greet families and children, offering the perfect opportunity for parents to snap a photo of their little ones with St. Nick. (Be sure to bring your phones for photos!)
Holiday Craft at the Library
Families can also get an early start on holiday fun by visiting the Orleans Library on Saturday morning. From 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., the library will host a “make and take” craft session where kids can create festive holiday decorations to bring home.
10th Annual Santa Hat Run/Walk
At 5:15 p.m., participants are invited to the 10th Annual Santa Hat Run/Walk, a free, family-friendly event perfect for all ages.
The run/walk will start at the bandstand, and participants are encouraged to wear their best Santa hats and festive attire. To kick off the holiday spirit, remember to join the fun by meeting at the bandstand at 4:45 p.m.
Children’s Christmas Funtime Express
The ever-popular Children’s Christmas Funtime Express train ride will also return to the event, offering free rides around the decorated Historic Congress Square. It’s a magical way for children and families to experience the square’s beauty in full holiday splendor.
Live Nativity and Musical Performances
A special Live Nativity, sponsored by the Orleans United Methodist Church, will be staged on the west side of the square, where animals will help tell the traditional Christmas Story.
Music lovers can also enjoy a special holiday concert at the Orleans United Methodist Church starting at 3:00 p.m., featuring musical performances by Hansol Kim and Sion Park. The concert is presented in collaboration with the IU Center for Rural Engagement and is open to the public. Following the concert, the historic church will be open to visitors wishing to warm up and reflect on the true meaning of the season.
In addition, both the Orleans Jr.-Sr. High School Choir and Band will perform at the event, filling the air with festive melodies.
Horse-Drawn Carriage Rides and More
Weather permitting, horse-drawn carriage rides will offer a cozy way to experience the holiday atmosphere. They depart from the Chamber Welcome Center on the north side of the square and are free of charge. Rides are sure to add an extra dose of holiday charm.
Postcards to Santa & Holiday Treats
Children can write letters to Santa and drop them off at “Santa’s Mailbox,” in front of the Orleans Chamber of Commerce. Free “Postcards to Santa” will be available for pick-up at the Chamber’s Visitor Center.
Orleans Tri-Kappa will also be on hand with a booth selling homemade treats and hot food to keep attendees warm. Their booth will be set up in the park, offering delicious options for everyone.
Downtown Shops and Eateries Open for the Event
Several local shops and businesses around the square will remain open during the event, offering a variety of holiday shopping options. Downtown eateries will provide festive meals and drinks for those looking to enjoy a warm bite to eat during the celebration.
