BEDFORD – The National Weather Service has issued a special weather statement for Lawrence County, warning of snow showers and squalls that will develop this afternoon and continue into the evening.
Between 2:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m., snow showers and squalls are expected to intensify across Central Indiana, with locally heavy snowfall rates at times. These conditions will result in drastically reduced visibility and may cause brief whiteout conditions as winds gust up to 40 miles per hour.
Minor accumulations, generally at a half inch or less, are likely.
As temperatures drop throughout the evening, the risk of flash freezing on surfaces increases, making roadways slippery and dangerous. Additionally, wind chill values as low as the single digits below zero are possible late tonight, mainly along or north of the I-70 corridor.
Travel conditions are expected to deteriorate quickly, particularly during the evening commute. The National Weather Service urges residents to be prepared for hazardous driving conditions, as visibility may change rapidly during heavy snow showers. Motorists are advised to exercise caution and allow extra time for travel.
Light snow is possible late Thursday afternoon and evening, focused across northern portions of central Indiana.
