BLOOMINGTON – The Monroe County Democratic Party joins with the community in mourning the passing of Monroe County Councilperson at-Large Cheryl Munson, a beloved and dedicated public servant who led with dignity and worked to improve the lives of the people of Monroe County.
She left a legacy of advocacy, commitment to community service, and tireless work for our environment.
“Cheryl Munson was a pillar of our community, and we mourn her loss with heavy hearts,” said Monroe County Democratic Party Chair David Henry. “She passed away peacefully, surrounded by her family and friends. Cheryl was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and friend. Her love for Monroe County, depth of knowledge about our community and its people knew no bounds, and her contributions to the community are immeasurable. While we are saddened by her loss, we also celebrate the incredible life she lived and the legacy she leaves behind. We pause to remember Cheryl and honor her memory during this difficult time.”
Munson’s service to Monroe County spanned several decades, including 16 years on the Indian Creek Township Board and election to four terms on the Monroe County Council, most recently in 2024. Her career was defined by her extensive work on rural representation, transportation safety, environmental advocacy, and fiscal responsibility. Cheryl was known for her thoughtful yet fiercely passionate leadership, her ability to listen to all voices and her belief that government should work for the people.
In addition to her work on the County Council, Cheryl was a lifelong volunteer and advocate for organizations across the county. From her involvement with the Monroe County Historic Preservation Board to her dedication to youth programs, such as 4-H and local schools, Cheryl gave her time and energy to causes that strengthened our community and brought people together.
“Cheryl was a friend to all, and she was always ready to listen, help, and offer support to anyone who needed it,” said Monroe County Democratic Party Vice Chair Efrat Roser. “Her passing leaves a void in our hearts, but her spirit will live on through the work she has done and the relationships she built over the years.”
