The Free Community Tax Service is looking for volunteers to assist with free tax preparation for low- and moderate-income families in Brown, Monroe, and Owen counties. As a Tax Hero, you’ll be able to put your problem-solving skills to work, make a real impact on local families, and gain valuable training and IRS certification—all at no cost.
Volunteers help screen clients during intake, prepare tax returns, and peer review returns to ensure quality and accuracy. No prior experience is needed—volunteers will receive comprehensive training in income tax law and tax preparation, along with IRS certification.
Last year, Tax Heroes filed over 800 returns, saved clients nearly $200,000 in tax preparation fees, and brought back more than $1 million in refunds and credits to local families.
The Free Community Tax Service operates from January to April each year, and this is your chance to help move people from poverty to possibility—one tax return at a time.
