BEDFORD — Altrusa International of Bedford, Inc. gathered for their January meeting at the First United Methodist Church, where President Bill Barnes led the session. During the meeting, Barnes introduced guest Deb McIntyre, a prospective new member sponsored by Becky Bailey.
The group took time to catch up on activities that had been delayed due to the holiday season and weather. Mary Barnes, Recording Secretary, shared that the club successfully provided Christmas baskets to 20 needy families in December. Each basket included a ham, vegetables, rolls, and dessert. The local Salvation Army provided the names and numbers of family members. In total, 93 people were fed through this effort.

The Grant Committee, consisting of Becky Bailey, Kathleen Row, Mary Barnes, and Bill Barnes, presented a $2,500 check to Tonya Vandivier, Director of LARC-Stonebelt Center, to support the program “Explore and Soar Toward Independence.” This program helps students develop essential life, social, and functional skills necessary for independence.
President Bill Barnes also reported that the nominating committee is still seeking candidates for the positions of Vice-President and Recording Secretary.
Loretta Bailey, Literacy Committee Chair, announced the successful delivery of numerous magazines to five nursing homes in December. Additionally, several Altrusa members volunteered to ring the Salvation Army bells during the holiday season. Their efforts raised a significant $2,500 at Walmart, which, with matching funds from Bender Lumber Company, resulted in a $5,000 contribution to the Salvation Army.
The club still has nuts available for purchase from their annual fundraiser. Varieties include pecan halves, chocolate Amaretto pecans, pecan pieces, deluxe mixed nuts, chocolate peanuts, and chocolate-covered raisins. At $12 per one-pound bag, the proceeds benefit the club’s community projects.

A special celebration was held for Sammie Kay Polley, who was surprised with a 50-year membership recognition. President Bill Barnes presented her with a 50-year service pin, an Altrusa mug, and a cake for all to enjoy, along with cards and mementos.
The next Altrusa meeting will be held on February 10 at 5:30 p.m. at Southland Church of Christ.
Interested individuals can contact any Altrusa member for more information or to purchase nuts.
