According to the probable cause affidavit filed by Sergeant Anthony G. Pope, the incident began when homeowner Michael Reynolds contacted Lawrence County Dispatch to report an unknown male beating on his back door in the 100 block of 4th Street. Reynolds described the suspect as wearing a black coat and jeans.

Upon arrival at the scene, Sgt. Pope observed the suspect actively attempting to gain access to the residence. Working alongside Officers A. Tillett and C. James, Pope confronted the suspect, who complied with verbal commands to move away from the house. The individual was then detained and identified as Matthew D. Robbins.

During questioning, Reynolds told police the attempted break-in had been ongoing for approximately 30 minutes before he called 911. He confirmed he was not expecting any guests and did not recognize the suspect.

In a subsequent interview conducted in the police vehicle, Robbins allegedly told officers he was “trying to get out of the cold” and denied any intention to steal. He acknowledged he did not know the homeowner.

Robbins was transported to the Lawrence County Jail, where he was booked on charges of attempted residential entry under Indiana Code 35-43-2-1.5.

Those facing criminal charges are considered innocent unless convicted through due legal proceedings. Accusations alone do not imply guilt; the judicial system will evaluate the presented evidence to reach a verdict.
