BEDFORD—The City of Bedford is searching for a candidate to fill a crucial role within its Planning and Zoning Department. The city is currently accepting applications for the position of Inspector, which serves as the Building Inspector and Code Enforcement Officer.

This role is responsible for conducting inspections of buildings and structures at various stages of construction, renovation, and repair. The inspector ensures that all work meets approved plans, local building codes, and state regulations related to plumbing, electrical, mechanical, and housing standards.

“This position more or less is the face of the city,” said Denise Henderson, director of administrative services for the City of Bedford. “This position is dealing with not only the public but other stakeholders in the city.”

Key duties include reviewing building plans for permit approvals, inspecting properties for code violations, enforcing city ordinances, and maintaining thorough documentation. The position works directly under the Planning and Zoning Director and plays an essential part in maintaining the safety and integrity of Bedford’s buildings and infrastructure. Strong communication and public speaking skills are essential, as the inspector will interact regularly with local businesses and the community.

Candidates should have computer skills, as digital documentation and reporting are key aspects of the job. Henderson emphasized that the city is committed to helping the new inspector succeed. “We will offer any support needed to ensure this person is successful in the position,” she said.

“They are very dedicated to ensuring people are living in habitable environments and making sure things are being done the way they need to be done,” Henderson said of the Inspector’s role with the city.

The position offers a starting pay of $25.71 per hour and follows a Monday through Friday schedule, working 40 hours per week. Additionally, the inspector will have access to a city truck for work-related purposes.

In addition to the responsibilities of the role, Henderson highlighted the positive work environment within the department. “The atmosphere here and the people this person would be working with, they’re just so supportive, and everybody pitches in and wants to do 110%,” she said.

Qualified candidates must possess a high school diploma or GED and should have two years of experience with construction practices and building trades.
